3 days ago my engine did turn off while i was driving, i pull the car check sparks due to a gasket problem that i had couple months ago, but everything good, keep mesing with them but didnt want to start, after 15min from the nothing it did start, just park the car and didnt pay attention, next day i did turn on normally, go to work and when i was leaving in the middle of the way it turn off again, i keep mesing with the sparks, a friend with more mechanical experience check the fuel filter and no gas going tru it, check the pump and no power was send to it later check that the fuse 18 was not receivinf power neither(i replace the pump couple months ago when i fix the gasket) after doing all that from the nothing it did star, i read this blog and check the relay, first an electrician check both orange relays(as far as i know one is for the fuel pump) and he told me both were dead, give two 30amp cheap ones, and when i tried to put them as soon as i try the contacts they click, so the problem was that they were powered all the time, i just take them outand put the stock ones, go to work come back after 8 hours try to start the car and nothing take a rest for like 4 hours more try again and nothing so go to sleep take my spare car and go to car, i scehdule a “good” electrician to check the car while i was at work, when he tried the car did star good, he told me after 30 min the car did turn off, and he reads problems with the crankshaft sensor and halleffect sensor (not sure about that last one, i research them with no luck) he explain me that one goes in the back of the engine and the other one under the car, close to the transmission, he told me to replace first the one that goes under the car after that if still the same replace the one from the engine and if nothing change the computer, but doesnt sound to convincing to me, anybody already try that, please help, not really with the money to take it to the dealer or to change all that parts just because
    thanks a lot

    good day to you,

I am having a similar problem with my 1997 e36 328i convertable. It was running and then cut out, since then I am not able to start it. The engine turns but does not take. I have telephoned the dealer and they suggested it could be the immobiliser or I need a new key. Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem may be? What I can check out to eliminate certain problems to try and pin-point the reason for not starting. Also, the electronic soft top is not working. They tried to break into my car and damaged the driver’s side lock, I had it rebuilt to suit my key, the central locking with remote and with the key does work. Thi car is really confusing me as I can’t seem to understand what the problem may be. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

😀 love that movie. FYI they are part of a collection of BMW films called “The Hire” of which there is two seasons(eight films in total plus two about making the films). If you can get hold of the full collection its well worth it.
