I wrote about the BMW E36 Harmon Kardon Audio System and it seems there is a lot of confusion about the number and locations of the speakers in that system. Today, I found a photo that will show the exact locations of the 10-speakers in that audio system. Take a look:

Also, pay attention to the location of the amplifier in the trunk.

After I saw this picture, I think there are two speakers in the footwell of the BMW E36, but I’m not sure if they’re working in my car or not. I know that my BMW E30 used to have 2 speakers in the footwell (left and right) and 2 speakers in the back. In the BMW E36, I just thought that the speakers inside the doors are just a replacement for the front speakers in the BMW E30. I should’ve checked these speakers in the footwell to verify their existence when I saw them, but it’s never too late. I’ve checked them today and they’re working fine. It’s cool to discover that there are actually 6 speakers inside the non HK systems.

in fact tony , this pic is for the non hk system.
the real HK doesn t have that type of speakers in the back (in the pic) . it s not boxy like in this pic. it s in fact rounded.

the non hk is 10 spkrs.(in the back, check it in your car tony , take off the cover and u will find a spkr and a tweeter.so 2 front,4 on the door panel, and 4 on the back=10 spkrs.

the hk is 8 spkrs since in the back ,it s replaced by one big woofer .will upload pics but i cant on this site.

@zouza: Thanks for the info. My car has only six speakers, not 10. 2 in the footwell, 2 on the doors (left and right) and 2 in the back. Take a look at my previous post Installing stock speakers inside your BMW E36 without making any damages!

About the pictures, please send them to my email and I will publish them here.

    There’s 3 audiosystem versions on E36’s.

    – 6 speaker system, non amplified.
    – 10 speaker “Hi-Fi” system, amplified
    – 10 speaker “Harman/Kardon” system, amplified (more powerfull)

All models (except convertible) with the H/K system come with a “Hi-Fi” switch that alters the soundstage.
On verts, this is done my the roof module, changing the stage when roof is lowered.
Vert H/K systems also come with a dedicated subwoofer, installed inside the ski-pass through-load.

Here’s a pic from the BMW ETK (that the dealer uses) from teh vert’s H/K system.

    Hey Guys,
I have an E36 316i. I thought of replacing my head unit and thankfully for what M-Parallel just posted that my car falls under the category where my audio is non-amplified.
Now my question would be is that if I decide to replace my broken head unit with a bahamas mp46, would it require the anti-theft lock code?
I was told here that if i decide to replace it and do not install a “module” of sorts, my car wont start at all just because the anti theft system was disengaged.

    Can somebody help me out?

I went to far to (almost) completely retrofit the H/K system in my vert to have acceptable sound without it becoming a “chav’s boombox”. And to keep it “OEM”.

I picked up an original subwoofer, amp and later on, original rear vert H/K speaker pods from a US forum.

Then I ordered the complete, main audioloom for the H/K system as I had the non-amplified system with no amp connections and all.

So during my vacation, I just pulled out the interior and installed everything. Was a major bitching job to do, but once finished, I was very, very happy.

I went as far to install the non-vert specific Hi-Fi switch I mentioned before so I can alter the soundstage at will and not because my roof is up or down.
