Its from a 78 6 series I think?

anyways....my roommates dad is getting rid of it
recently I have been wanting to take on a project car as I finally can afford to.
His dad recommended me to find a late 70's or eairly 80's model 5 series...

What do you guys recommend?
And if you guys are not too sure about this engine, could you point me somewhere where I can get info?

Welcome Nugs.

Considering this is an E36 forum most of the knowledge contained in the minds of forum members is likely to be about 3 series 1990-2000~

There is lots of BMW fourms around that cater for all series and a wider range of ages so I would think they are a better bet for information.

If you're after a BMW project car I would be suggesting an E30 bit if you're after a 5 series I would be saying an E12 as the E28's are kinda ugly. A smaller version of your engine was used in some of the E28's which may make it a little easier.

What benefit do you see from dropping a '78 3.3l into a lightly newer(and unattractive) 5 series?
Do you know how much work is involved in engine swaps?
Are you sure it'll fit?
How mechanically inclined are you?
How much money have you got to waste? I can't imagine older BMW parts are going to be easy/cheap to get.

Just some food for though. Not trying to put you off or be hostile, just wondering if you know what you're getting yourself in for.

Have a google for more information if you like. The engine you're talking about is a M30B32 (it's actually only 3.2l but BMW like to round up)
