What year is your car again?
The main mounting bracket on the pre 96 starter motor is 3 times thinner than on the 96 starter. It may of well sheared off and is only been held on by the 1 or 2 other mounting points.
Get someone with a keen ear to stick there head in the engine bay while you start it.

(Disclaimer: obviously keeping fingers and loose clothes from the aux belt)

What price did he give you for the recon?

Dunno bout 1 out of the scrappers, its a sumwhat significant part but if you could get a good look at it and you know what your looking out for.

If your selling the car i would just go for a 2nd hand part but if your keeping it id put in a recon job.

Any ideas on what car next if you do sell it?
