316i compact instrument cluster problem Help, please.

Postby Zoltan on Mon Nov 17, 2008 8:58 pm

Hello,
I'm wondering if I'm alone with this problem. I have a 316i compact, 2000, 1895 cc, left hand drive. I took it to a mechanist to install front fog lights. He had to take out the instrument cluster to fit a small lightbulb in that tells me the lights are on if I turn them on. After putting the instrument cluster back the speedo-odometer and the fuel gauge didn't work. Rev counter fine, thermo fine. Sent it to examine: processor frozen, not repairable. Bought a replacement, one with miles on: speedo-odo fine, fuel gage fine, rev counter and thermometer not working. He sent it back, got another one, got the same problem, but the other way round, speedo-odo fuel ok, rev and thermo dead. Phoned BMW, couldn't help. New unit is about 400 GBP, nd 4-6 weeks (cannot wait that, he's been working on this problem for more than a month now, anyway!!). I've checked RealOEM.com, put the VIN number in and checked for instrument clusters, I've got the following result:

E36 316i 1.9 Part Search
Searching for: instrument cluster: I've got the following results for my car:
Part 62118381845
Part 62116903051
Part 62116903031
Part 62116905057
Part 62118381849
Part 62116903055
Part 62116903035
Part 62116905061
Part 62118381845
Part 62116903051
Part 62116903031
Part 62116905057

The part number of the original one is BMW 62.11-6 905 056, VDO 110.008 831/133 A. VDO 88311221 43250.
Is that anything special about this car that it doesn't seem to accept any other instrument cluster apart from this one? Or is it possible that any of these part numbers would fit in my car too?

Also when I entered Part 62116905057 I've got that the following types of cars are using the same instrument cluster:

E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, AUTO (CS21)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, AUTO (CS21)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, RHD , AUTO (CS22)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, RHD , AUTO (CS22)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, MANUAL (CS11)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, MANUAL (CS11)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, RHD , MANUAL (CS12)
E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, RHD , MANUAL (CS12)

Can anyone help me how to solve this problem, where to find this part?? I really don't know, searched the whole e-bay and everything, but I didn't find the exact part number for my car. Now I'm just worried to put anything else in, would be a waste of time, maybe.
If anyone has the part number 62116905057 for E36 316i 1.9 COMPACT, M43, Euro, MANUAL (CS11), I would be very glad to buy it!

Your help is much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Zoltan

I hope that you have fixed your instrument cluster by now. It's March.

Could you please share your experience, as I am having the same issues: Instrument cluster totally dead, exception is the lights.

And how much did you pay for the other instrument cluster on ebay?
