Haha he promised he won't try to race until he's more confident in his driving skills
He DID just get his license after all

I see, that's good then. I thought any of the DIY's required crazy knowledge of the vehicle beforehand.

Thanks! I will enjoy tinkering with my own 318i (no mods yet, still figuring out what needs to be fixed/replaced etc..)

A 318 would most likely be a pretty decent starter car if he's willing to pay the bmw ownership premium.(high intial cost, expensive parts, and pricey service) You can save on parts etc. if you shop around on the net. An auto is a good idea for city driving too. I started out with a 325is and its been a great car with absolutely no problems, mileage is decent too.

At least with a 318 he's not going to win many races so that might put him off.

The DIY's are pretty good. I would say most of them are better than the service manual.

I like your thinking. It's sad how many people buy a car and get straight into the mods and wonder why it doesn't move any faster.

Update: My cousin has decided to get a 318i like mine. I am helping him look for a decent one locally. Hopefully there is an unmolested one for a decent price somewhere...

Once he gets his bmw we'll be going through the DIY's together :D

I'm on a tight budget so for now most of my money is forced to go to repairs :P
I'd be quite screwed if I spent my money on mods only to have something major break after all my money is drained..

Thanks for your help everyone, I'll post an update when my cousin gets his BMW :P

Finding 318's is easy, when you get picky and want an unmolested one that’s when it gets harder :P

DIY’s for the sake of DIY’s or just to fix up whatever problems it has? If you let me know what you’re after I’ll keep an eye out for you.

Being forced into repairs isn't quite as good as preventative maintenance but at least you're going in the right direction.
It’s also true that mods tend to increase the risk of something breaking because it makes it run less like how it was designed to.

That is so true. I've been helping my cousin look on Craigslist and all the 318's on there are over 200,000kms and look like they've been abused pretty hard :(

I plan on fixing anything that comes up myself to save a bit of cash and gain some knowledge :P

My 318i doesnt seem to have any problems yet, but I'm assuming there will be some in the near future. So I thought maybe I should put a bit of money aside in case anything breaks. And since I still owe a bit from my student loans I figure I should hold off on the mods for now...even though I'm dying to swap the wheels & get new bumpers! The ones on mine are chipped and ugly :(

P.S I found a low mileage 325..I just dont know if its been overpriced or not. I've posted it on another thread.

I think the idea was the he wasn't going to be racing so performance parts probably aren't needed

last ten (10) years I am driving different BMW's (I have over 20 years a driving license) and I can say that the saying that Germans have is very , much true "Ones BMW always BMW" and just for information about the ones that think that they are lucky with their BMW's and many of them are not: 50% of all sold BMW in the world are series 3 models!!!! Check in the internet! Therefore you can not compare BMW with Japanese cars… Come on... Japanese??? Never ever… ever... better walk or gate a bicycle, good luck with your BMW. just treated with respect and put original spare parts.
