abs lights on, thermo gauge goest to maximum and engine sudd

He Follks,
I drive a 2000 e36 316i Compact with about 200000 km. I have an idle problem which i haven't fixed yet, however recently I experienced a new one:
The abs light comes on suddenly, the thermo gauge goes over maximum and the engine cuts off. All of these sometimes during driving (!!) sometimes the car does not even starts. I took it to a machanic who said it is a voltage problem ut couldn't figure out a solution for me.
Anyone had a similar issue?
