BMW e36 convertible

I have a BMW e36 all the ign lights are working but engine will not crank over. Does anyone know what the problem could be.

It is possible you lost the connection between your key chip and your 'reciever' at your ignition.
Do you have another key to try? This is not common unless you were someplace where your key was exposed to high magnetic or EFI/RFI levels. I know an electrician who keeps spare key hidden away at all times in case he forgets to take his key out of his pocket when working in high voltage substations.

That is possible as ignition was left on and battery ran flat, and we have only has this problem since the battery ran flat thanks for your help.
