change ecu, ews and key chip

Hi there i've got a problem i need to change my ecu and ews unit on my 318is and i'm not sure were to locate both units and do i have to disconnect the battery first?
Any help would bb great, thanks.

ECU is in the engine bay behind the sound deadner on the fire wall. Just follow the big bundle of cables to it. I can't really remember but i think its on the drivers side.
EWS is stuffed somewhere in behind the steering wheel. Again, just follow the wires from the ignition back. There will be a good few wires but only 2 of them will lead back to a box located near the steering wheel.
Do you have a new ECU or are you having it remapped?

thanks for your help,
i'm replacing my ecu with another one from a breakers because i have a running problem and was told by an auto electrician that it is the ecu at fault and i thought it would be easier and cheaper (£40 plus vat) to replace all the units rather than getting just the ecu and getting it recoded for my existing ews unit.
