check engine light

howdy all
well it seems as if my check engine light doesnt work any idea as to the part # or how to fix such
its a 1994 bmw 320i last seven digits of vin are FD00438

having some issues with electrical, have replaced alternator and crankshaft sensor and still no spark to the plugs plus check engine light is out
or can someone suggest scan tool that would be of use that doesnt break the bank account

if the check engine is do these put the on start depress the gasoline pedal 5 times and the check engine light should blink if there is a code look it up on internet
