Dishonest fuel gauge?

Postby DaleKP on Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:21 am

G'Day all,
I own and run a stock standard E36 318is 4 door - which makes it a 1997 model. I have had no dramas with it at all.... until a few days ago, after filling the fuel tank. The next morning, I started up, got normal indications / self test etc on the instrument clusters, but as I started driving, the fuel gauge dropped from full all the way to empty and the fuel warning light came on. This lasted for around 5 or 6 seconds after which the gauge went back up to full and the light went out.

During my 15 minute run to work, same thing happened a couple more times - never for more than a few seconds. This continued happening for the next couple of days, and then the "fault" went away. I then noticed that after 100 kim's driving, the fuel gauge was still resolutely indicating 1/1.

Another 30 km's on the clock, and it has now at least dropped another 2mm away from the ful, so I am hopeful that my fuel sender isn't completely stuffed and telling me lies.

Has anyone here had any similar issues?
