Not easily. I have seen it done but they have all put heaps of work into customizing the whole body... It's no where near a straight swap.
How come you wanna fit one?
Have you seen them? E46's have the grills as part of the hood where as the E36's don't, I can't comment on the general shape but the grills are a major problem.

I agree. It's not going to be an easy task at all!

I have read online elsewhere that the two tops are not compatable. There is a difference in measurement from edges to pin placement for the rear pins. I spent 6 months researching and finding a top for my e36 M3. I just bought it last month for $600 locally which is a killer price. Over the past 6 months I have priced between $1000 - $2000 and never found one closer than 250 miles from Baltimore.
send me an email if you need a pdf of instructions for installing the install kit which you will likely need when you purchase your top. I got mine from bav auto in NH for $105. My local bimmer dealer wanted $180 and both shops would have to order from BMW North America before sending to me. It did not include install instructions which I have obtained from my local dealer.

Are we talking about the convertible ragtop here? I just recently replaced the ragtop on my e36 with an eBay haartz vinyl ragtop(with window included). The steps are EASY!! I got to say, BMW designed a great top and I could not believe how easy it was to replace! If you need some help with instructions I can help out, but I'm not sure that's what you are needing help with.
