e36 318is m44 idling problem

Postby bloomers76 on Fri Apr 16, 2010 5:23 pm

hi i have a e36 318is coupe and a bit of a problem,
when i bought the car it seemed to run fine and all was well then when the weather turned cold i had a idling problem people todl me it was the icv or it was the tps i cleaned out the icv and replaced the tps with a spare that my friend had but no difference, i checked the wireing to both units and found them both to have been cut and crimped at some point i then decided to solder the wires and shrink wrap them. When i unwraped the tape from them i noticed the brown wire going to the icv was not conected but when all wires were conected the idling changed from dipping below 1000rpm to starting at 2000rpm to dip down to 1500rpm.

i have had the car to a auto electrician and he said it could be either the ecu or the air mass cylinder on inspection of the ecu it is written in pencil DOSE NOT RUN. how easy or hard is it to remove and replace the ecu with a new one.

not sure were to start with replacing bits can anyone shed any light and point me in the right direction, all comment will be much appreciated. thanks James.

Replacing the ECU isn't too hard, its just getting a new ECU at a good price is the hard part.
