E36 Stereo replacement

Good morning,

I have replaced the stock head unit in my 97 318 conv with a new Alpine and have found the results less than satisfying. It is decidedly an issue with speakers and amps. Couple of questions:

1. To remove the door panel speakers; do the speaker grills come off or do I need to remove the door panels to replace the speakers ?
2. Are the mid-range door speakers a 4" or 5 1/4" ?
3. Because this is a convertible, my rear speakers are buried in the rear seat panels. Do I remove the panel to get at the speaker or can I remove the speaker grill leaving the panel in place. Is there room in the rear for a larger (6.5" or larger) speaker?
4. Without using the trunk, has anyone found a good place to bury a sub somewhere?

The start of a long journey begins with the first step. Planning a winter project.
Thanks for your input. Ken

1. Pass but I'd of thought so,
2. Pass no idea,
3. Pass I'm not being much use really,
4. How about the center of the rear seat? There is an opening where you are able to poke ski's through. With a quick trip to a DIY shop and a couple of hours grind you can make a proper tidy job of it.
