electrical issue?

Postby bantifinda on Sat Oct 24, 2009 11:14 pm

i have a 98 318i 4 dr and lately it has developed this problem whereby when i step on the brake pedal while driving, my radio goes off and comes back on. the interior/instrument lights also flicker. sometimes when i park and turn the key to kill the engine ,everything including instrument lights go off then come back on. when am parked and the car is running, the interior and exterior lights flicker when i step on the brake. anybody know whats wrong? i have checked my battery terminals and they are good.

Electrical issues are always hard to diagnose over the web, as they can be many and varied - HOWEVER - the fault you have described sounds very very much like what would occur with a earth fault. By that I mean that somewhere on your car there is quite possibly a poor earth connection. I would check that the earthing connections to your chassis are clean and have good metal-to-metal connection. It might not be the answer but it would be a good place to start

Yea thats deffo sounds like earthing cable. Have a good pull of all earthing connections.

Check your fuel pump fuse in the engine bay.
If thats ok then check power to the pump with a voltage tester.
