Engine sounds rough when turning off

Postby wayneke on Sun Oct 25, 2009 12:38 pm

Hi, I'm new to this. I just bought my first bmw two weeks ago. It has a full service history by bmw. Its a 1996 e36 316i think its the m43 engine it has a timing chain. Anyway the drives like new. I dont know much about bmw's as this is my first. Two things I wanna ask you guy's. First is when I start the car first time after been off for a while the rev's are about 800 RPM & only when the car heats up & running for a while the revs idle around 1100 - 1200 RPM. Is this normal? because i had a Honda Accord bofore the BMW & that use to be the other way around. 1100 RPM when started up & then idle around 900 RPM when at normal running temp. Second thing, when I turn off the car after been driving for a while the engine or gear box sounds rough like a diesel car when the car is turning off, is that normal too? Oh yea one more thing the gears are very tight going into all of them, maybe i'm just use to the honda but they just seem tight going into 1st some times. Maybe the noise when turning off the engine & this means I might need to replace the oil in the manual transmision gearbox. I had to do that before with the honda. Any ideas?

The low idleing at cold and fast when warm sounds like the idle governor.
I find my gearbox the same as yours, very stiff and tight in 1st. Im not familiar with BMW gearboxes but as far as i knew they all go like that after a while but it does'nt mean its on its way out.
The ONLY Hellrot Red 323 in the world, emmm except for the other few thousand dotted around the world.
