exhaust fume smells rich

hey there, just got my 1996 e36 320i and im havin a bit of a problem, as my header points out, my exhaust fumes smells rich of fuel and im having these weird episodes of my idle going up and down, already read tony's DIY on cleaning the ICV but im not too keen on doing it on my own, i might accidentally DIY(Destroy It Yourself) the said unit. i might try to clean it if the procedures were done on the same engine as mine. anyone had the same problems? or if someone has link on how to clean my engine's ICV I would genuinely appreciate it.
