Is it smoke (thick and takes a good time to mix with the air) or is it just the gases coming out of the exhaust. The gases will mix with air very quickly and will usually disappear before they get to the height of the car, smoke wont and you will see it raise alot higher than the roof of the car. If it is smoke, then id say its more than likely water mixing in the cyclinders. Very hard to say without seeing it though!
