Failing MOT!!

Postby flyboyprowler on Mon Aug 23, 2010 5:07 pm

Hello everyone,
My beloved 328i touring is due to fail its MOT which expires mid September. Apparently the rear shocks are bad, one rear disc pitted, three brake pipes corroded, the cat not good, and the ABS light is on!!! All in all the garage say it is not economic to repair.
After 11 years of ownership, I really can't bring myself to scrap it, and there is a lot on the car that can be reused, or indeed, preferably rebuilt.
The car is a 1995 328i touring, manual, mileage 146130, leather, sports seats,(drivers seat is worn on the side bolster) upgrade alloys, sunroof, good radio/cd, I have the full service history from new and I am the second owner. The engine was replaced under warantee by BMW and has done around 90,000 miles, it uses no oil and the clutch and gearbox are fine. The bodywork and paint, metallic black is excellent, the car has been full maintained up till now.
If any of the site members would like to take on the challenge, I would love to hear from them.
Please call, 01403 262244
Best wishes and thanks

the thing is youve owned it 11 years and now if you sell it you wont get what you want in cash terms, then your buy a new car and you could find your self at the very same dision come the new cars mot. if the car is same age etc

if your not good at doing these bits your self then learn, the shocks, 2 bolts up top and 1 bolt at the bottom, even my gran could do this bit,

rear discs,.. 2 bolts to remove carrier, one torx bolt holding disc on, sorted

brake pipes, replace them and bleed them though, this may be tricky for some one with no car mechanical knowledge, but its cheap to get these replaced. and the abs light well that could be sensors, pump, ecu or the hub its self.

if you can live with out abs till after the mot, then two screws to take the speedo out and remove the bulb, its not a legal or mot requirement to have abs. but to have abs light on is a mot failure! strange i know but there you go.

but

if you feel a new car is on the cards and you want that then the engine is still worth a good bit of money and i know what's listed is fairly easy.

might also be worth getting a quite from a different garage - there are a couple of indie BMW specialists in my area and funnily enough the better of the two is also the cheapest!
