Fuel Gage and Range Miss-Reading

Postby jitsjaf2009 on Tue Oct 09, 2012 1:15 am

I was at about 1/4 tank and headed for San Diego (80 miles each way) so filled up. Gage and range did not change AND continued to reflect progressive consumption until low fuel warning came on and range said 51 miles. Pulled over shut down removed key and restarted to see if would reset....No! I continued to drive and gage now showed empty and Range said ____ ___. Tried removing and resetting gas cap. Many starts and stops last two days...still stuck on empty and Range blank. I looked around in the trunk for any possible warn wires. I hope someone has a sugestion which would allow me not to have to pull the fuel pump to check the sensor. Thanks...Jim

You're not going to like it but my suggestion is to pull the pump and sender unit. It's a fairly painless process.

Some one suggested the following: With ingnition off, pull fuse 46, turn ignition on and back off, reinstall fuse. Turn ignition on and see if it has cleared. It worked. The suggestion said if 46 didn't work, try the same procedure with #31. It depends which one is dash displays for your model. My 1995 325i liked #46.
Thank you for your response, Tony...that would have been my nexy move. (Please note, I counted to 10 after I turned ignition on with the fuse out.)
