Help please

Postby sput on Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:43 am

Hiya peeps..
bought a nice looking Bmw316i 1995 e36 with a timing chain,
been told the head A has now gone...very geutted when had a quote for £700.
i have some basic history in some merchanics not to sure what to do here.ive taken the rocker cover off and the front of the timing chain..cant get the viscus fan off need a 32mm spanner..im not 100% sure iff its the head gsket as the engine runs so smooth , no trace of water in the oil. but temp rises up very fast , no heat from heater, changed the thermostate...it also seems to pressure up through the expansion tank when you realease the cap after the engine has been running for about 15 mins.. do any one have any ideas and help with my soulotion please. thanks sput...

have you lost any power?
any "mayonnaise" under the oil filler cap?
does it idle roughly?
any blue smoke?
a "rotten egg"smell from the car?
was the thermostat new when you changed it?
whats the millage on the car?

Hi thanx for getting back to me...
yeah it do smell a bit funny from the exhaust, runs very well. no smoke 120k miles, no molsified oil in filler cap,
when the engine is running its fine for about 15 mins and then starts to pressure up and all the hoses go hard.ive taken the thermostat out and checked the heater matrix, that is ok, i have fitted a new radiater, new water pump.
no smoke out the exhaust...
when i remove the radiater cap the water surges out the header tank and you can hear a banging in the water system.its not a big end bang or camshaft bang...do you think the head gasket is gone and compressing back through the water system.
Thanks ...
