Hi,

Sounds like a bulb to me- & if so the E36 is one of the easiest cars to fix this on!

If it was my car I would make sure I have radio codes etc before I disconect the battery & leaving for an hour or so to make sure the air-bag is unlikely to deploy. I'd then remove the two screws at the top of the instrument cluster (these are just in front & above the clear instrument window). Place a towel over the steering wheel to protect instrument panel from scratches & gently pull out the instrument cluster from the dash' just enough to get hands behind. Locate electrical contact blocks & gently release them (can't describe here but not difficult to work out). Carefully pull cluster towards steering wheel & remove to the left on a right hand drive car, or to the right on a left hand drive car. Once it is out check the bulbs behind your kilometer counter (odometer). There are three types of bulb behind the instruments, so make sure the replacements are correct. As the book says, installation is the reverse of removal.

I hope this helps- but do at your own risk (I'd do it for you if I was there!)

Cheers & Best Wishes, O.J.
