Mileage Dispaly

Hello, new to this forum, just bought a 1998 318ti compact, seems to be in really good condition, but my question is when i turn the ignition on i get the mileage and service display up but it then goes out after about 15 seconds!!! Is this normal? If not any ideas on how to fix the fault.
