model number's

Postby ron on Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:46 pm

Went into my local Motor Factors the other day for some engine oil, Stated it was for an e36 328i, after the guy checked on his computer, he asked me "Was my car a 2.0 or a 2.8 " I laughed and said "Well its a 328i so why would it be a 2.0 Doh!!! 3 meaning 3 series and 2.8i meaning 2.8 lol," Ive had my car for 10 years and never been asked that before, but according to this guy in the shop and his work mates that they did make 2.0 328i's also 1.8, 3 20's and 1.6, 318's I didn't believe them as surely this would cause one hell of a lot of confusion, so the question is, are they right , has any one on here got a car with conflicting model number, engine size, seems blooming stupid if this motor factor's are right.

I Love it when a sales clerk knows his stuff. I had one tell me he had a 1995 325i got rid of because the valves in his V-8 required to much maintenance at about $500 twice a year per BMW.
I just smiled and said that was why I had a 6...he then asked it it was the Inline or V-6. He heard the Inline 6's were gutless. Go figure.

Ive Googled this question and it seems people do have 2.0 328's ....... but these are 2012 diesel models but as far as e36's are concerned I doubt very much if the blokes in the motor factor's are right. oh and as far as the straight six's being gutless mine has genuine 95k and still goes off the clock at 155 mph and keeps up with evo's and most other cars in acceleration so they are hardly gutless !!!

Strange thing about these model numbers seems logic that a 3.28 is a 3 series 3.8 litre engine, like wise a 3.16 would be a 3 series 1.6 litre engine, but who am i to argue or know better, these model numbers may well not be logically set, just seems silly to me so thought i would bring it up in the forum. Would be nice to hear what others think !!!!!!!!!!!! :?

According to anything I can find....320 = 2.0 ltr, 318 = 1.8 ltr, 325 = 2.5 ltr, 328 = 2.8 ltr, 525 = 2.5 ltr, 540 = 4.0 ltr and in the 7 series you can have 740 as either 4.0 ltr or 4.4 ltr (I vrs il) 750 = 5.0...am I deluded??? :o
