No Communication from ODBII interface

1998 BMW 238is - My Check Engine light is on, I went to an AUTOZONE to get a reading of what code(s) might be causing the problem. The tech connected to the under dash point but he waas unable to get a reading, just a no communication error. Have anyone seen this? and what was the resolution?
