Parking Brake Wire Connection

Postby kcs on Wed Jul 06, 2011 7:21 pm

1994 325iC. Bought the car used about a month ago. One of my many small projects includes getting the parking brake indication to work. When I removed the parking brake handle boot I found the parking brake wire dangling in the breeze. When I ground-out the wire, the parking brake light illuminates, so I know the circuit is good. It also appears my switch is intact. Problem is I can't figure out how the wire actually gets attached to the switch. There's nothing on the end of the wire. It appears the wire somehow gets attached to the brass-colored clip that's attached to the top of the switch plunger. When the brake is applied, the plunger and the clip move down, contacting the bracket. I assume this provides the ground to the wire to illuminate the indication. I initially crimped a butt splice on the wire, and attached the butt splice to the clip. Unfortunately the clip does not seem to be a very good electrical conductor, and with the butt splice installed I still could not get the indication to work. I suspect I'm missing a part or parts. If anyone has a few spare moments and can pull up their parking brake handle boot and describe how the wire is connected to the switch, I'd surely appreciate it! Thanks!
