Please Help!!! Strange sound from the car's rear....

Hi all,recently bought bmw 318is 96 reg,on a way home heard a strange kind of humming sound from the rear,faster i go more constant it becomes,at slow speed 10-20mph everything seems ok,any ideas what it can be?thanks

Sounds like the rear wheel bearings are on their way out.

I agree, it's most likely to be a wheel bearing. I suggest u replace it soon to avoid major trouble if it fails completely while driving.
You can find a DIY on YouTube. Fairly straightforward task but might be a bit tough to remove because the bearing has been there a long time.

Thanks guys,will try to jack it up tomorrow and check it one by one.i think the best thing is to check with engine on and accelerating a bit/. :?:

That doesn't sounds very safe!!
If your going to replace them make sure to do both left and right bearings.

Hi decided to do just one side,is there any options to take the wheel bearing without special tools or without removing axle?thanks

After removing the wheel and the brakes, I've seen it done with a hammer and a metal stick. You don't have to remove the whole axle. But I reccomend checking out a YouTube video of a DIY on how to change a wheel bearing of an E36..

Hi thanks for quick response,yeah i saw a video on YT ,replacement of wheel bearing on e36 includes removing the output shaft,any chance of doing that without removing the shaft?thanks
