rear suspention

I have just bought a e36 325i SE

I am having a few worries the back end seams bounce on bump roads. theres vibration above 60 mph. the rear drivers side sits lover than passengers. the car feel lose at speed.

Is this likely to be bushes or shock??

any other ideas

The bounce is due to worn out shocks. The vibrations could just either be bad alignment, or the bushings as well. Just have everything checked out as well as there could be more things needed to be replaced.

rear driver side sits lower.. been discussed in many forums, still a myth! im on 18's and the clearance is also diff between fenders and wheels, rear right rubs when hard cornering.. ( my camber setting are negative(-)1.5 all round...)

i had the same problem in my car.. the rear driver side was sitting lower.. but the problem in my car was that the last coil of the spring was broken... funny thing didnt look broken from plain sight.. we only discovered while changing the rear rotors..

I have two problems on my car that are might be pertinent....

1. The rear end seems to have erratic side movement. Upon throttle lift, sometimes the rear will step out. Usually to the right. Also on some bumps it will do the same thing.

I replaced the rear shocks, and a tire shop said that everything was tight in the rear end.

2. I have a steering wheel vibration at 40 to 50 mph. Sometimes it does not show up during acceleration through that speed range, but always while decelerating through the speed range, or while steady driving through town at 40 to 50. Also, it vibrates the same way while braking through 80 to 70 mph.

A tire shop told me he did not know what it was. Another tire shop thought it was a bent rim. I replaced the rim on the rear that they thought was bent, and it has not changed. I have replaced all the rotors and still no change. The wheels have been balanced twice by both shops. The car has been aligned twice.

Any Thoughts???

Go to a good independent BMW mechanic and ask them to take a look at all of the bushings in your rear suspension and sub-frame. I’ll bet you’ll find the problem there. I’m having the same issue with my M3 after a season of autox and my mechanic believes we’ll find the culprit in the worn bushings.

hey guys i have the same problem and ive even taken it to a bmw garage. this is realy frostrating me because its been lowerd on shocks and springs by 30mm and i have a set of 18" 235 wide tyres to go on and its going to be really close to rubbing on the drivers arch.

[color=#FF4040]a mechanic has said that he would put a second spring pad on the bottom of the spring on the lower side to raise it up, will this work.??[/color]

Interesting - I had to raise my suspension back up on my 318is. Previous owner had lowered it by 55mm and put 19" rims in place of the 15" factory alloys. Couldn't get the camber or castor to come right no matter what the tyre shop did. I eventually took it to Pedders, a suspension specialist and was told that whilst toe in can be adjusted, Camber / Castor on BMW's isn't adjustable and is set by spring height.... therefore lowered springs = inability to properly adjust / set up wheel alignment.

So I put the stock standard springs in and..... alignment now perfect and it handles and rides better.
