To VMZ.
Thanks for your response. I downloaded a copy of the 3 series owners manual previously but there is little information regarding this topic. Was the procedure you posted from a 318 Ti handbook? There seems to be quite a lot of differences of E36 models depending on year, cc rating, whether saloon, coupe, hatchback etc and which country exported to. I live in New Zealand and my 318Ti is an import from Japan.
Thanks again and enjoy your ride.

The procedure I posted was from the hand book that came with my 1998 328i shipped straight to Australia I believe. The hand book I have sitting in front of me covers Saloon/Coupe/Convertible/Touring 316i,318i,318is,320i,323i,328i,318tds,325td,325tds. Admittedly the 318Ti isn't on that list but it seems strange that they would use a different remote system but it would seem the have.

I know this is a very old topic but I spent 3 years by searching for the right way to pair the remote control key with 2 buttons (infra red) to an E36 and here it finally is:

1. Get in the car, close all the door
2. Switch the key to position 1 and 0 briefly, pull the key out of ignition
3. Press and hold the round button. While the round button is held, press the rectangular button 3 times, then release the held round button. The LED on the key should start blinking and blink for the next 10 seconds.
4. Whild the LED on the key is blinking, get the diode on the key aimed to the receiver on the interior rear view mirror not further than 15 cms from it. Press one of the buttons.
5. As a confirmation, the car locks and unlocks once.
6. If you have any other key to pair (even if the key was previously paired), repeat steps 3 and 4 not manipulating with the ignition lock.

Hope this will help somebody else if not the original creator of this topic.

Regards
Martin from the Czech Republic
