Im after a bit of advice about my bmw e36 318i L reg. its rough as hell on tick over usually ticking over at aroung 1500rpm when started, when warm it can sometimes drop to around the normal revs however it only takes a dap on the throttle and it will either go up to 1500 again or down to the point of cutting out. Some times it will also hunt between 1500 to 1800 revs. Ive had it to bits checked all the pipes for splits, checked gaskets plugs ive cleaned the ICV everything i can think of really. Could it possibly be the air mass flow sensor/meter? i was told by unplugging it if the car a bit better it might mean its faulty however its as bad plugged in or not. My only other thought is maybe o2 lambda sensor? Any ideas would be greatly helpfull as im running out of ideas.

Dear M3EVOSTAR,
Try to check this 2 items: First, check idle valve wiring which have 2 wires, maybe 1 of them cut off. Secondly exhaust sensor wiring, maybe it touching the exhaust pipe, become a short cct.

i'm also having a bit of difficulty with my idle, during summer months, it idles fine, doesnt sputter, etc, however in winter time, it will chug until it cuts out. that being said, it sat for about a year, started fine when the alternator problem was corrected, but was doing this even before that, so i dont think it would be bad gas from sitting....or maybe i'm wrong, but any help would be appreciated, and didnt think of it til now, it's a 96 328iS coupe, 5spd

I had a similar problem once, turned out to be a faulty ignition spark. Might be worth checking them out before doing a more expensive diagnostics check.

Is there a connection between the aircon and rpm guage? It was twice already that happened to me when my 97 e36 had a rough idle and found out that the prm guage was not working and so is the aircon. after several tries of restarting the engine suddenly the prm guage and the aircon went back and the engine was now running good. This morning same thing happened again. Aircon and rpm guage is not working and idle is again rough. Can somebody help me with this problem. Thanks alot.
