I have a 1993 318is. The car has had tons of fuel problem. When I put it in gear it sputter usually 1st thru 5th after 50 miles hour it seems to run fine. I took it to the dealer and they said it was probaly a vaccum leak. They were going to have to take off intake and manafold to fine the leak. That was going to be $650 for a hopeful solution. Any had this problem and how hard is it to remove that stuff.
Checking for vacuum leaks is easier than you think and you can do it yourself. Simply, get a carburetor cleaner can and try to spray it around your engine while the engine is running. You should hear a change in the car idle when you spray the cleaner in an area with vacuum leak. Just try to spray around the air intake boot specifically as it's very common for it to has a leak or you can examine it by hand to make sure it's in good condition.
I would also suggest doing a scan for it and see what the error codes are. They usually give you a better idea about the problems in your car.
