i have a j reg e36 with a loud tapping that stops after the car has been running a few minutes. is this a common fault? and should i be worried?

yes i think your oil pickup may be block or your oil tube that runs along the top may be block i would check it

Tappets can get noisy, just check your oil, use the right stuff and make sure its the right level.
The ONLY Hellrot Red 323 in the world, emmm except for the other few thousand dotted around the world.
