throttle potentiometer- is this the problem?

can any one help me i have a 1992 320i and i am having issues with the engine idle, i have taken my car into bmw and had the air flow meter replaced about a month ago as my car was idling weird and revving really high and really low then cutting out, it worked really well to start with but i found that i have now got the same problem that i started with, they have now told me that it is the throttle potentiometer and i am unsure if i should let them replace this, i dont want to have to back there in a months time with the same problem, if you can shed some light on my situation i would like to hear from you.

oh and it seems to be worse when my car is cold (the weather is cold) thats when i seem to be having the problems with it.

This reminds me of one time when my car did the same thing you decribed above. It wasn't idling, shaking and there was white smoke going out of the exhaust especially when you give it some gas. It also seemed very weak.

The problem was in the air flow meter. When the mechanic has removed the cover, he found that it was filled with water believe it or not. First, I don't know where the water came from except assuming it was withdrawn from outside, but at the same time, the cover was a little bit cracked, so after using hair dryer to dry the water, he closed the cover again and glued it. I've never faced the problem again. Maybe you should check that yourself. It's not hard to do and you don't even need to remove the whole air flow meter. Just the cover.

hey, i have just had the air flow meter in it replaced and the icv cleaned so i know it is non of those, they seem to be pretty sure that it is the throttle potentiometer but i will find out later in the week when it goes into get fixed

There are alot of causes for a rough idle. There is an intake boot that leads into the throttle body, alot the time those begin to dry rot an allow unmetered air into the engine causing it to stumble and run like a bag of rocks. Another issue comes from the oil/air separator (it relieves pressure in the crank-case and vents the gasses back into the intake usualy for idle air control) basicaly the egr valve found in domestic vehicles. its kind of a pain uin the a$$ to change without the right tools and technique. So you brought it in and they still can't get your diag. right?

These air filters are exceptionally designed for air exhaust performances and requirements.
