Im not certain now, seem to remember a debate going on in the Legnum VR4 forum.
This subject was brought up about the mitsubishi Legnum vr4 and its max towing capabilities.
From what i remember hearing off people, a general rule of thumb is that a cars max or near max towing weight is the same as the curb weight of the car and i think it was for all cars.

also depends on when you passed your diving test because after 1997 the rules and regulations changed for british drivers. anyone whos passed their driving test after 1997 now have to take an additional test, :? :? :? :? (you can still tow upto 750kg unbracked or braked.)

BUT......

between you and me there is a lou-pole around this i will do my best to find this info out because it helped me out lol

if you passed before 1997 then you are unrestricted and your bmw would happily pull 1600kg in a manual car, and 1500kg in an auto .

hope this helps.

Just checked my own driving licence, in Ireland there is no weight limit on what you can tow as long as its a single axle trailer. To tow a double or bigger you need to do another test.
But in Ireland its illegal to tow a car, if your car breaks down you have to get a tow truck unless your car breaks down somewhere where it will cause an accident, then you have to tow it to safety and wait for a tow truck. Saying that though, iv never been stopped while towing a car and iv even driven past the local fuzz while towing so its not that well enfoced.

Suppose "law" wise it just depends where in the world you are.
