Weird problem with my Front windows.

Postby Haak on Mon Mar 15, 2010 7:15 pm

Hi all
Im no bmw expert by far - cars general either so i seek guidens ;)

My problem is with my BMW 318i Stasjonwagon - short time after i bought it, my windos (only have el. front) started to get abit slobby.
When i started my car they wouldnt always work, but after driving around for like 10min the light on the buttons would glow up and the windows started to work.

But after some time they stopped working at all atleast i thought :P one month with no lifesignals i was on a long trip and After driving for lik 2hours they suddenly worked! for 5min! then they were off again!

Tried to check fues, but as i see it there aint a fuse in the spot were it should be? and if i put a fuse in it still dont work. so i dont think thats the problem....im stranded here :P so before i put it in a workshop and spend hundreds of dollar on the shop to figure out what the problem is i figured i should ask here incase any of you have experienced the same :)

Any ideas?

Looking forward to replys and hope there is help to find :)

Regards Haak

The fuse box in the engine bay will have the designated area for fuses written on the lid of it. Check the fuse that should be in the window slot and make sure its the right rating. Then get a screwdriver with the built in voltage tester (you can buy them for a few cents in most hardwear shops) and check what voltage you are getting at the switch and the window motor itself.
Unfortunately when it comes to electrical problems you cant just ask someone on the internet and they will tell you what the problem is, electrics are a bit more complicated to fix than mechanical problems.
Check what voltage you are getting, it should be 12volts under load.
If your not getting any voltage at all it could be the comfort relay (if that needs replacing then your sunroof wont be working either)
If your getting varying voltage it could be anything down to as little as a bad solder.

Did the sunroof and windows stop working at the same time?
