fuel economy gauge

Hey,
I have a 95 316i compact and the fuel economy gauge doesn't work. It will stay at zero when the car is still then take off all the way to the top of the gauge when i accelerate. I was curious if anyone else had experienced this problem and weather it was a simple fix?
