Hopping in 1st gear????

Postby 96_323 on Fri Jun 04, 2010 3:04 pm

Just noticed the other day that my car was begining to hop in 1st gear under heavy acceleration.
I remember someone on here looking for help to a similar problem. I began checking fuel and then the entire system today, started at the back and worked forward. No problems there :?
Took the car out for a spin for a closer feel to the problem, this time it was hopping (losing power then suddenly regaining power) badly in 1st and a little bit in 2nd. The slightest bit of acceleration in 1st was making it do it, i couldn't push the accelerator past 1/3 open before it would do it.
I drove the car very easily untill i got home.
I thought the diff might have some nasty particles in it that were jamming cogs under heavy load. No joy
Now i was getting pist right off!!!!!
No warning lights or anything. I decided to check air system and i found it. The intake pipe behind the air filter had a big rip in the under side.
A full morning wasted on a bit of rubber corrosion.

I didn't even think of doing a complete visual check, i don't know why but i just got it into my head that it was a fuel issue.
I got a soldering iron out and melted the rubber back together and then wrapped it in insulating tape. Forgot to say how i fixed it.

Im a big fan of using the soldering and a hair dryer for repairing plastic and rubber ribs or cracks. After enough practice i can make it look like there was never a rip or crack in the plastic or rubber.
